The search for the Quagmire triplets in The Ersatz Elevator ended with a literal red herring, but The Vile Village is almost entirely red herring, as the children are sent to become the wards of a village known only by the mysterious letters “V. As the children work each day, they struggle to figure out where Count Olaf could be hiding the Quagmire triplets. Detective Dupin arrives on a motorcycle as he can’t be busted for violating the same rule due to not living in the Village of Fowl Devotees.

The children insist he is not Count Olaf, but the townspeople ignore them. The Vile Village in particular shows that to outwit the elderly tyrants in your life, you have to be smarter, more clever, and braver. It was filled with weirdos and crows. His tone of voice is unique and wonderful.
Lemoyn there are no longer any relatives willing to take the three children in and risk Count Olaf’s wrath, the children’s lawyer has decided to follow the aphorism, “It takes a village to raise a child,” and place the Baudelaires in the custody of an entire community. But, Celyn enjoyed me reading it to her, and it’s an OK book, little better or worse than its mid-series predecessors.
