I lost my breath and bawled when she talked about “something being broken inside” and proceeded to calmly describe the murder of a Jewish child in front of his mother by a Nazi. Rutka’s Notebook is very slim, all of 90 pages if I remember correctly, with the afterwords included, and is still something everyone interested in the Holocaust and Holocaust survivors should read. It tells dd how people in hiding were forced to hide their true feelings and live amicably in confined quarters, despite their laskeir. A tiny photograph of Rutka is printed in the top ed corner of each of her entries, so that you must look into her eyes after turning each page.


The diary is brief—only 20 entries over a four-month period.

Rutka hide the notebook and told her non Jewish friend of its location, which is how the notebook survived after her death. What a horrifying time in history. However, I found Rutka’s book interesting to read as well. Her life becomes part of the reader’s life in this unforgettable diary. She writes, as would any 14 year old girl, anywhere, ever, of books, her friends, crushes and how her intimate feelings are changing, but set against a background of persecution, and unimaginable brutality that she witnessed first hand.

Rutka is being hailed as “the Polish Anne Frank. I would recommend this book to individuals interested in studying the holocaust.

Rutka’s father survived the war and remarried, having another daughter who didn’t know of her older sister for a long time. While Anne had to stay hidden from the Nazi’s, Rutka had to interact with them first hand, and her diary tells of some incredibly disturbing incidents as her family is forced to move to a ghetto and go through “selections” where you don’t know if you will end up going home or being sent to a concentration camp.

It was so sad to read the daily thoughts of such a young girl who should have had a long life ahead of her, and all the while knowing that she would not make it to adulthood. Some people compare this book to Anne Frank’s Diary.
