Understanding Psychrometric Charts, Mechanical (HVAC) Courses from Mid Career College. MCC has been providing training for building services. The Psychrometric charts provide a graphical representation of the thermodynamic properties of moist air using the data contained in CIBSE Guide C. The. A practical introduction to psychrometry and the use of the psychrometric chart as a design tool. KS20 is essential reading for those involved in designing and.

The designer whether aware of it or not will already be applying frequency-based weather data when undertaking any building load analysis, even when calculating a simple steady state building heat loss. The graphical representation provides, at the least, a swift visual check on the value, but also can inform and communicate the effect of alternative values on the consequent plant operation.

The data can also be used to establish how frequently the selected design values are likely to be exceeded. Over the next blogs, I will cover different aspects of the chart and show how it can be used in practice. The effect of the time period used for averaging the temperature observations may clearly be seen by noting that the hour data is far less extreme than the hour data. This is indicated in Figure 7 as air stream A mixing with air stream B to produce mixed air at condition M.

These particular data in Figure 2 have been laid out in terms of the percentage occurrence of coincident pairs of dry-bulb temperature and moisture content.

And, of course, is most frequently sensed using an electrical or electronic device. The wet bulb temperature is the temperature that a sample of air would reach if it had a fine spray of water added to it the water being at the air dry bulb temperature without any external heat being added or taken away this is known as an adiabatic process.

The parameters described so far are combined to produce the psychrometric chart, which dates back to empirical work undertaken by James Glaisher in Greenwich in the first half of the 19th century. The chart was later refined by others in the US, including the famous Willis Carrier at the beginning of the 20th century, by which time the uncertainties of wet bulb temperature measurement were well understood.

Looking at the height of the yellow column, it occurs on the equivalent of just under one daily period per year. It is a graphical representation that shows properties of air at 1 atmosphere pressure These calculations may be reorganised to determine unknown variables for any of the processes illustrated in this article. There may also be some concerns as to the effect of climate change on future, predicted values based on historic data.

The process that would typically result from a steam humidifier almost pure latent heating is indicated in Figure 4 — it can reasonably be considered as a vertical line following a constant dry-bulb temperature.

This combined process will produce an off coil temperature somewhat higher than that of the actual temperature of the coil known as the Apparatus Dew Point, ADP and shown as point X on Figure 5. This will relate such parameters as the number and shape of coil rows, the spacing and type of fins on the coil, and the air velocity. This is the nominal air pressure at sea level.

If molecules of water vapour were to be continually added to a volume of static air for example, from a room humidifier then at some point the air would not be able to support any more molecules — the air is said to be saturated at that point and any further water molecules added will simply condense out. These were taken from data produced by the Meteorological Office 3. So considering the yellow shaded area, the -3 o C bin — this bin is the sum of historic occurrences of 24 hourly averaged outdoor temperature between Inferred frequencies of occurrence of wet bulb temperature and specific enthalpy, together with any other air properties that are included in the psychrometrc psychrometric chart, are now automatically available for analysis.

The use of computer modelling tools enables designers to evaluate options of building design and plant selections at the press hcart a button. These measurements may be undertaken in a number of ways including the Sling Psychrometer see Figure 1 and the Aspirated Hygrometer. Figure 7 — Psychrometry of Mixing Air Streams. This may be achieved, for example, with a heater battery made up from rows of hot water or steam coils, or electric resistance heaters or as the result of some heat recovery mechanism such as a flat plate heat recovery device.

The outline of the chart is as shown in Figure 1 and it may be ciibse for individual rooms or processes as cibee as describing the changes to properties that take place in a cibze air handling system.

Immediately, looking at the chart, the data are transformed into a form that allows quick visual evaluations of conditions without any formal calculations. This equation allows calculation of the properties of gases under different pressures and temperatures. Figure 1 cibze Outline Psychrometric Chart. This article will explain how to set this up, and explore some first examples of application.

Module 9: The basic psychrometric processes

Figure 2 — Psychrometry of Sensible Heating. On the curved edge of the chart there are scales for wet bulb temperatures and specific volume with the specific cibwe scale drawn in steps. But, more importantly, this data pstchrometric, if available, the numeric data used to create this graph, may be used to see how many hour periods have a hourly averaged temperature below the bin of -3 o C. As with any gas, the moving molecules of water vapour in the air exert a pressure.

Water vapour H 2 O constitutes about 0. A couple of the data points appear to exist in the impossible area to the left of the saturation curve; this is due to the approximated sketch of the psychrometric chart and should not distract from the bigger overall picture.

The psychrometric values were based on the on-coil and off-coil dry-bulb and wet-bulb temperatures as indicated in the diagram. However, when evaluating the comparative operation of different possible solutions, it is important not only to take into account the values of the operational pstchrometric in design and part load conditions, but also to consider how frequently this might occur.

But chat data are limited to just temperature: Figure 2 is indicative of a type of weather data that can psychrometrkc sourced. Figure 4 — Psychrometry of Steam Humidification.

We apologise for this. My thanks to Dr Roger Legg for his publications, which provided underlying material for this article. A steam humidifier will produce a small amount of sensible heating since the higher temperature of the device the tube carrying the steam into the air will increase the temperature of the air and there will be a very slight sensible heating effect from the steam itself.
