Finally, this is a story about the past, and as such, the ending is not so much an ending as a beginning. I wanted to be devastating, but he lacked appearance in so much of the book that I just didn’t feel it. He might possibly be the most evil, sadistic, narcissistic character I’ve ever read about. This is the best YA fantasy I’ve ever read about the Bitterblie genocide. Po is in this book quite a bit more than Katsa; he becomes more of friend and sounding board for Bitterblue, while Katsa is a beloved but still awe-inspiring figure for Bitterblue.
